Advance care planning…what is it? It is making decisions regarding the health care we would like to receive should we become unable to speak for ourselves.
As part of advance care planning there are 2 legal documents considered ‘advanced directives.’ These legal documents, ‘Medical Power of Attorney’ and ‘Directive to Physician and Family or Surrogates (Living Will),’ need to be in writing to be honored. This is what we want to know.
What can we do when we know a family who is affected by a life-threatening illness? All the usual help with chores and errands is invaluable. Also, consider being an advocate for the family regarding comfort for the person affected. Know there are specialists in palliative medicine and if it becomes evident that the person is suffering, learn as much as possible about palliative medicine and share it with the family. |
